Beforehand, please remember that the discussion is not about the morality of pirating games, but rather about extending the functionality of the steamcontroller. There are many various reasons why somebody pirates and we are not here to judge. So basically, I see many posts every week about User complaining about 'non steam games' only using the default controller setup which the game had on release or by the time it got cracked and not starting big picture, or starting a weird big picture u cant set ur controller with. My main guess would be that these are mainly the games, where the crack uses steamapi.ini and dll, which overwrite your settings of your main steam account and apply a default configuration to your steamcontroller.
You can change the default configuration by first playing the game and seeing which config applies and then changing this default config on controllerbase ( for example gta 5 uses gamepad with mouse like analogue stick, so go into steam, controllerbase, switch out gamepadfps.vdf with a different controller setup and name it the same, tada if u start gta 5 u will have your desired config), problem is every game needs different controls, and its cumbersome to always switch out vdf files. Any ideas are very appreciated. Edit: Nice solution: glosc got updated, download the newest, download newest, extract glosc, install all redist, right click on all infs from the newest vigem update folder and install them, now start glosc and u can easily select all games which have issues, restart steam and start the games in 'admin' steam from the new auto created shortcuts. Presumably non-steam games that don't use Steam-related cracks permit Steam to access your account settings (Steam controller settings are account-specific, not machine-specific), whereas cracked games must in some way bypass Steam's account systems. So the difference is that these are games that are designed to interface with your Steam account and have had those features hijacked, whereas truly non-steam games don't interact with Steam systems at all beyond what Steam injects into them.
Steamapi.dll needs to communicate with running Steam instance to enable controller emulation. What's exactly what crack should prevent at any cost. So you can either re-implement relevant parts of steam api and gamepad emulation layer (that should be possible at least on Linux) or modify steamapi.dll in way that presents game played as one you actually own and run it with Steam. I wouldn't dare that:) Another Windows option is just scrap entire steamapi thing and hook into xinput.dll instead. You'd basically do same thing as x360ce does, just with SC as input source. I believe that's most viable approach. Regardless of the morality of pirating games, why are we even entertaining a discussion on how to make it easier to use the Steam Controller with pirated games?
Regardless of anyone's reasons for pirating, full functionality of a game, Steam Controller, etc. Comes from a legitimate purchase of the game. If you're going to pirate, then you need to accept that you either don't get to have the nice things everyone that paid for the game gets to have, or you at least have to work harder to get these things. I totally agree with you for the paid benefits, however I just wanted to point out there are some legitimate cases for piracy. For instance, I tend to pirate Steam games I already own on Steam so they're less of a pain to get running under Wine on Linux, especially if Steam is already running nativy at the same time or just some shitty DRM (looking at you, uplay). I also hear there's a lot of german people doing so to play the non-kiddie version of many games despite owning the censored version legitimately. Tho on Linux we have the excellent sc-controller project that's pretty much 1:1 equivalent of the real Steam, so the steamapi.dll doesn't interfere in my particular case.
The only reason piracy is relevant in this thread is that those games comes with a fake steam dll which ends up screwing with the controller config a bit. I feel it's still on topic to find out how to get the controller config to work properly. I get that there are legitimate reasons, laid out a pretty good one I hadn't considered with games that are censored in your region and you want the non-censored version so you buy the censored one, and pirate the non-censored one to actually play. But good/legitimate reasons for it doesn't change the fact that it's still piracy and you're still subject to penalties if you get caught doing it. In this case, the SC not properly working is one such penalty.
I think there's plenty of information on this sub about setting up GloSC, desktop bindings, and Xoutput, etc. That we don't really need dedicated threads to remind people who pirate games that these are convenient ways for them to circumvent these restrictions. If they can figure out how to pirate the game, they can figure out how to search for ways to run 'non-Steam' versions of games (that only ever released on Steam, of course) without us writing a convenient how-to manual for them.
I'm no saint here, I've pirated my fair share of games in the past, but I did so knowing the risks involved. Knowing I might not get updated versions of games that fixed bugs, knowing playing online was probably out of the question, knowing I could get my account banned, knowing I could be fined or even jailed, and knowing I might be very limited in my playing options. And all this was before developers started fighting back with specific things that only happen to pirated copies of games. Well there are other reasons rather then pirating games for emulating steam ini. Afaik mods use it, dedicated servers or sometimes it just helps against compatibility issues. Also any development you make in this part also could help with legit games that just doesnt work well with the sc. Opening this post helped me, so for me it was a success.
In our dorm we familyshare one steam acc with many games for 4 people and have one steambox, lately I wanna play gta 5 and my friend wants to play bioshock infinite and we usually play at the same time, so i dont feel morally obligated to pay money for a game we already have and instead simply install a crack on it and enjoy the freedom it gives me and my friends to use the account, I just want the story anyway. Thats why we got our gaming pcs in the first place- customability and freedom you dont have on consoles.
I picked up Borderlands 2 for OS X in the recent Steam sale because friends of mine would NOT shut up about the game. So I fired it up only to find out that I needed to use a keyboard (lots of keys) + a mouse (carpal tunnel = no) to play. I was hoping that I could use a borrowed Xbox 360 controller to play through, but Aspyr doesn't support that. So after some research I found a way to use both a wireless Xbox 360 controller as well as a wired third-party Xbox 360 controller. This worked for Borderlands 2 and other games I've tried so far. The cost for this is $5 for the wired controller and $20 for the wireless. Here are the two setups that worked for me.
To connect the wireless 360 Controller to my Macbook Pro I got for $15 (incl. Tax) on Amazon. The computer still wasn't recognizing it, so I installed Tattiebogle 0.11 which you can download. Follow the instructions for installing and then open up the 'Xbox 360 Controllers' icon in your System Preferences. Link up your controller to the receiver and you should now be able to see reactions to you messing around with buttons and analogs on the 360 controller.
This is great, but many games will still not recognize your controller. So now you need to map your buttons to keyboard commands.
To do that you will need to get in the App Store. Once you're in Joystick Mapper you can assign all of the buttons and analogs to keyboard and mouse controls. This will take some trial and error to find out what works best for you, but it does work. There are many many different 360 controllers out there. Fortunately, there are people out there who can help you out. Once you have Tattiebogle installed you can add support for more controllers.
After installing Tattiebogle like described in the last step for the wireless controller, download and run the command script to update Tattiebogle. This comes from Shoryuken forum member EddDeDuck. The forum post I found this is.
(Note: found out the link for the command script is now broken. File attached to this step) You will also need the Joystick Mapper app from the App Store to make this work. OK, that's it.
Attachments. Why play games on a Mac? It's what I have. For my work, the Mac works really well. If I was gonna be serious about games, I'd build a desktop machine. Fortunately, the Mac gets a few games thrown its way as well. Why are you playing on windowed mode?
I play on full-screen. It's windowed here to emphasize that it's OS X and not Boot Camp or Parallels.
Why not use keyboard + mouse? I've had lots of problems with mice in the past with some carpal tunnel issues.
They hurt my wrists after using them intensely for 10+ years. Hi, I did this and I got the following error, does anyone know what I can do? More info: I used parallels and created a virtual machine. When I plugged in my xbox 360 receiver, it asked me if I wanted to map it to my Parallels virtual machine or my computer (my Mac). I mapped it to parallels. But now I am trying to map it back to my Mac and I have no idea how to because the 360 receiver hardware isn't registering in the driver configuration settings for the 360 wireless receiver. However, the controller has been registered by my system profile.
Tldr; my mac recognizes my controller, but the drivers don't, and I think the cause of the problem is because somehow my controller is tied to my parallels virtual machine desktop. Additionally I fear somehow some of my system memory is somehow tied up in parallels and not accessible from my mac desktop. Not sure if that's even possible but it appeared my video card RAM was lower than the specs should be in my system profile. But I'm a noob so i could be wrong.
